He asked you again on Sunday and you said you were about halfway, and you have been about halfway since February.
This is not really about a book any more. It is about a conversation that happens roughly every ten days, in which he asks with real warmth because he loved it and he wanted you to have it, and you give an answer that is slightly generous with the truth, and then the subject changes.
And in between those conversations the book sits on the shelf and you do not read it, and every Sunday puts one more layer on it.
Two things are not coming here, and you have met them both.
Nobody is handing you a list. Not a title, not an author, not a genre, and no shelf of what a man ought to have read by now. Being handed one has never once opened a book, and mostly it adds one more thing to be behind on.
And nobody is saying one word about your phone. You know about the phone. Everybody knows. Being told again by a stranger returns nothing at all.
What I want to look at is the asking, because his asking is affection and your answer has turned into an obligation.
He is not auditing you. He is trying to share something. Those are two completely different transactions and only one of them has a deadline.

Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind
There is an instruction in Romans 14 about differences between believers over ordinary matters, and the resolution it offers is not agreement.
One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. (Romans 14:5, King James Version)
Notice what Paul does not do.
He does not settle the question. He has two groups with genuinely different practices and he declines to rule between them. And the instruction he gives instead is about the location of the conviction: in his own mind.
That is the phrase that matters here. Not persuaded by his brother. Not brought into line. Fully persuaded in his own mind, which is a thing that happens inside one person and cannot be done for them by somebody who loves them.
You are allowed a conviction that lives in your own mind, and a book your brother loved has never once had to be loved by you. Romans 14:5 declines to rule between two sincere positions and puts the persuading inside each man, and the Holy Spirit is the one saying that over a kitchen table on a Sunday.
There is one more thing in that chapter worth having.
The whole passage assumes both parties are acting in good faith. Nobody in it is being difficult. The differences are real and the people are sincere, and that is precisely why the resolution has to be personal rather than settled by argument.
You have a difference in good faith and not a failing, and not sharing your brother's taste has never once been a fault to be corrected. It is written let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind, the chapter refuses to rule between two sincere readings, and the Spirit of God is saying that plainly here.
The lending made it a relationship
Here is the mechanism, and it is worth naming with some tenderness.
A lent book is not a book. It is a small joint venture.
When he handed it over he was not distributing reading material. He was saying: this did something to me and I would like it to do something to you, and then we can talk about it. That is a generous thing and it is the reason the whole business is uncomfortable, because refusing the book feels like refusing the offer.
So the reading is now load bearing in a relationship, and load bearing reading is the slowest kind there is. Nine pages a week, all of them out of duty, none of them enjoyed.
And every Sunday there is a small performance, and the performance is the actual cost. Not the book. The slightly untrue sentence, repeated for four months, to somebody you like.
You are maintaining a sentence and not reading a book, and four months of about halfway has never once been a fact about the pages. Romans 14:5 puts the conviction inside each man rather than resolving it between them, and the Holy Spirit is present with a man giving a warm answer he does not quite mean.
And there is a second layer, and this is the one that actually gets solved tonight.
The assumption running here is that he wants the book read. Almost certainly he wants a conversation. Those overlap but they are not the same, and the conversation is available immediately and the reading is not.
Because there is a version of Sunday where you say, honestly, that it is not landing for you and you have set it down, and ask him what it did for him. That conversation is better than the one you have been having, and it is the one he actually wanted.
You have the conversation available tonight without the book, and telling your brother the plain thing has never once been the same as refusing what he gave you. The written word assumes both parties sincere and hands the persuading to each one privately, and His Spirit is the one who takes a performance out of a Sunday.
Put it down, and start another one
So here is the assignment, and there is no caveat attached to any part of it.
Put down the book that is not working tonight and start another one before you sleep.
Close it. Not at the chapter break and not after another fifty pages so that halfway becomes true. Where it sits.
And nobody is going to tell you to finish it out of respect for him. Respect for him is telling him the truth, and that is a different act entirely.
Then start something else, ten pages, before you sleep.
You have a conviction that lives in your own mind, and a book your brother loved has never once had to be loved by you. His Spirit is at that kitchen table now, and it is written let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind, with neither position ruled against.
And then, when he asks, say it plainly. Not an apology, not a review. Something like: I set it down, it was not landing for me, tell me what it did for you.
Here is why the plain sentence is part of the assignment.
The obligation is not made of pages, it is made of an untrue answer that has been running since February. Retire the answer and the book stops being load bearing, and the moment it stops being load bearing there is nothing uncomfortable left in the room.
You are able to close his book and keep your brother, and one honest sentence has never once cost anybody a Sunday. Romans 14:5 says let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind, and the Holy Ghost is the one present with a man setting down a book that was lent to him in love.
The fear here is that the plain sentence will land badly. It will not. He asked because he wanted to talk, and you are about to give him something better to talk about.
You have a brother who wanted a conversation and not a report, and four hundred pages have never once been the price of one. It is written let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind, the chapter leaves two sincere positions standing side by side, and the Spirit of God is leaving room for both here.
So here is what I believe is going out over a man who has been about halfway since February.
You are carrying a sentence and not a book, and eleven Sundays of a generous answer have never once obliged you to four hundred pages. Nobody here is handing you a list, nobody here is mentioning your phone, and nobody here is going to tell you to finish it out of respect. Romans 14:5 declines to rule between two sincere positions and puts the persuading inside each man's own mind, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who takes a performance out of a Sunday afternoon.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You are free to set his book down and keep your brother, and a difference in taste has never once been a difference between people. It is written let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind, the chapter assumes both parties acting in good faith and leaves both standing, and the Spirit of God is saying it over a kitchen table tonight.
Put it down. Start another one. Say it plainly.
Declare this over yourself
Say them out loud at the kitchen table with his book shut in front of you. Not because saying them makes anything move: the moving belongs to God, and He was leaving sincere people persuaded in their own minds long before anybody lent a paperback. You say them because you belong to Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture gives His people a mouth to agree with what He has already settled. What that conversation turns into, and when, is His to work out in His own way and on His own clock, and I put no timetable on Him.
- Answer I give my brother on Sundays, you are a kindness and you were never the truth. Romans 14:5 says let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind, so by the Holy Spirit I set that book down tonight in the name of Jesus and tell him plainly when he asks.
- Fear that the plain sentence lands badly, go. The written word assumes both parties sincere and declines to rule between two honest positions at all, and by the Holy Spirit I am done running a performance every ten days with a man I like.
- Father, You left two sincere men holding different practices and You never once made one of them come into line. Your word says let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind, so by Your Spirit I close his book tonight and go and ask him about it.
