You paid sixty cents for it because of what it felt like in your hand, and you have been slightly embarrassed about that ever since.
Here is the moment, because you know it well. A table of used books, a broken spine, a first page you read four lines of standing up. And something opened. Not a plan to read it. Something more like a small door, a sense that there is a world in there and it might be yours for an evening.
You bought it. You have not read it. And the version of that story you tell yourself now is that you were being sentimental, that you buy books for the feeling and not for the reading, and that the feeling is a slightly foolish thing to spend money on.
Two things are not coming here, and you have met them both.
Nobody is handing you a list. Not a title, not an author, not a genre, and no shelf of what a woman ought to have read by now. Being handed one has never once opened a book, and mostly it adds one more thing to be behind on.
And nobody is saying one word about your phone. You know about the phone. Everybody knows. Being told again by a stranger returns nothing at all.
What I want to look at is the embarrassment, because I think you have got the wrong thing filed as the foolish part.
The hoping was not silly. The hoping is the most reliable thing about you, and Scripture uses it as a definition.

The substance of things hoped for
There is a definition at the top of Hebrews 11, and it does something strange with hope that is worth slowing down over.
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1, King James Version)
Read the word substance.
Not the wish for. Not the anticipation of. The substance, which is the solid part, the thing that has weight, the material. Faith is described as the actual stuff of the thing that is hoped for, present now, before the thing itself has arrived.
And then the second half is the same claim from another angle. The evidence of things not seen. Evidence is not a feeling about a thing, it is a piece of the case.
So in that sentence hope is not the flimsy end of the operation. Hope is what is being given weight, and the weight is described as being there already.
You are holding the substance of a thing not yet read, and sixty cents spent on a hope has never once been sixty cents wasted. Hebrews 11:1 calls faith the substance of things hoped for rather than the wish for them, and the Holy Spirit is the one saying that over a table of used books on a Saturday morning.
There is one more thing in it and it is about direction.
Everything in that chapter after this verse is people who acted on something not yet visible. They built, they left, they went out not knowing where. The definition is not there to describe an inner state, it is there to introduce a list of people who moved.
You have a hope that came with a small movement attached, and reaching out for a book has never once been the same thing as being sentimental. It is written the evidence of things not seen, and the whole chapter after it is people who acted before they could see, and the Spirit of God is saying that plainly here.
You filed the best part as the silly part
Here is the mechanism, and it is a filing error with a moral tone.
Somewhere, buying became the frivolous half and reading became the serious half.
And the story that follows from that is simple: a serious person reads, a frivolous person buys, and a woman with eleven unread second hand books is a frivolous person who has been kidding herself for years.
Except look at what buying actually was in each of those eleven cases. It was a moment where a door opened. Sixty cents, four lines of a first page, and something in you said yes to a world you had not entered.
That is appetite. It is the rarest and least manufacturable part of the whole business. You cannot decide to want a book. Either the door opens or it does not, and yours opens regularly, and you have been treating the one part that works as the one part to apologize for.
You are ashamed of the most functional thing you do, and a door that opens over a broken spine has never once been sentimentality. Hebrews 11:1 gives the hoping the substance rather than treating it as the thin end, and the Holy Spirit is present with a woman who has been apologizing for her own appetite.
And there is a second layer, and it explains the eleven.
Because the buying is filed as frivolous, it cannot be followed up on. Acting on a frivolous impulse would confirm the whole diagnosis. So the book gets bought and then set down, and the setting down is a way of not committing to a thing you have privately decided is beneath a serious person.
You have permission to follow up on your own appetite, and acting on a hope has never once been the same thing as indulging it. The written word calls hope the substance and then lists people who moved on things they could not see, and His Spirit is the one who takes an embarrassment off a woman's best instinct.
One off the pile, where you actually sit
So here is the assignment, and it is a follow through rather than a new start.
Take one off the pile tonight and put it somewhere you actually sit.
One. Ideally the one whose buying you remember best, the sixty cent one with the broken spine, the one where you can still picture the table.
And nobody is asking you to reduce the pile or to stop buying. Neither of those is coming from here, tonight or ever. Buying is the part that works.
Then put it where you actually end up sitting: the chair, the counter, the arm of the couch.
You have hope with the weight on it, and a door opening over four lines of a first page has never once been sentimentality. The Spirit of God is present at that table, and it is written that faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Here is why the one you remember buying.
The point tonight is not to read a book. It is to complete one arc: a door opened, and something came of it. One completed arc is what dissolves the story that the buying is empty, and the story is what has been standing between you and eleven books.
And where you actually sit rather than where you intend to sit, because the chair in the room nobody uses is where good intentions go.
You are able to finish one arc that started at a folding table, and following up on a sixty cent hope has never once been a foolish way to spend an evening. Hebrews 11:1 says now faith is the substance of things hoped for, and the Holy Ghost is the one present with a woman carrying a broken spined paperback to a chair.
Read ten pages of it if you feel like it. Not required, and not the measure. Moving it is the assignment.
You have appetite that arrives without being manufactured, and a thing you cannot make yourself feel has never once been the frivolous half of anything. It is written the evidence of things not seen, the chapter that follows is nothing but people acting before sight, and the Spirit of God is acting here.
So here is what I believe is going out over a woman slightly embarrassed about a sixty cent book.
You are carrying an appetite that arrives on its own, and eleven second hand books have never once made you a sentimental woman. Nobody here is handing you a list and nobody here is mentioning your phone. Hebrews 11:1 calls faith the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen and gives the weight to the hoping, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who takes a shame off the one part of a person that is working.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You are free of a filing error that made your best instinct the frivolous one, and a door opening over four lines of a first page has never once been a thing to apologize for. It is written now faith is the substance of things hoped for, and everything in that chapter after it is people who moved before they could see, and the Spirit of God is saying it over a broken spine tonight.
One book. The one you remember buying. Where you sit.
Declare this over yourself
Say them out loud in the chair with the broken spined one in your hand. Not because saying them makes anything move: the moving belongs to God, and He was giving substance to hoped for things long before anybody put sixty cents on a folding table. You say them because you belong to Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture gives His people a mouth to agree with what He has already settled. What gets read off that stack, and when, is His to work out in His own way and on His own clock, and I put no timetable on Him.
- Small embarrassment about hoping over a book, you are a habit and you were never wisdom. Hebrews 11:1 says now faith is the substance of things hoped for, so by the Holy Spirit I take the sixty cent one off the pile tonight in the name of Jesus and follow up the promise I bought it for.
- Story that says buying is the frivolous half, go. The written word gives the substance to the hoping and then lists a whole chapter of people who moved on what they could not see, and by the Holy Spirit I am done being ashamed of the one part of this that works.
- Father, You called faith the evidence of things not seen and You never once treated hoping as the thin end of it. Your word says the substance of things hoped for, so by Your Spirit I finish one arc tonight that started at a folding table.
