I Cannot FinishProverbs 13:12

Fourteen Months On The Same One

This message is for the man who has carried the same book for fourteen months and reads nothing else because of it

That book has been in your bag since March of last year and you are on page one hundred and forty.

Fourteen months. You have carried it to work and back roughly three hundred times. It has been rained on. The corner is bent from the same spot in the bag every day, and the marker has moved about ninety pages in a year and two months.

And here is the thing that nobody would put together for you. In those fourteen months you have read nothing else, and it is not because you had no time. It is because that one is in the bag, and the bag holds one book, and until this one is finished the next one cannot start.

Two things are not coming here, and you have met them both.

Nobody is handing you a list. Not a title, not an author, not a genre, and no shelf of what a man ought to have read by now. Being handed one has never once opened a book, and mostly it adds one more thing to be behind on.

And nobody is saying one word about your phone. You know about the phone. Everybody knows. Being told again by a stranger returns nothing at all.

What I want to look at is the line, because there is one and it has been stopped for over a year.

That book is not slow. It is a gate, and everything is behind it.

Fourteen Months On The Same One

Hope deferred maketh the heart sick

There is a line in Proverbs 13 that names what a long wait does to a person, and it names it as a physical thing.

Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life. (Proverbs 13:12, King James Version)

Read the first half carefully.

Hope deferred. Not hope denied. Not hope refused. Deferred, which means still coming, still theoretically alive, just not arriving. And what that does, the proverb says, is make the heart sick.

That is not a mild claim. It says an indefinite wait is worse for a person than a plain no, because a no can be absorbed and a deferral cannot, and the sickness is what happens in the meantime.

You are carrying a deferral and not a book, and fourteen months of almost finishing has never once been the same thing as reading. Proverbs 13:12 says hope deferred maketh the heart sick and names the deferral rather than the denial as the sickness, and the Holy Spirit is the one saying that over a bent corner in a work bag.

And the second half is the turn.

But when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life. The proverb does not fix the deferral by getting more patient. It fixes it by arrival. Something has to actually come, and when it does the whole thing turns from sickness to a tree of life.

You have something waiting that has to arrive rather than be endured, and one more month of carrying it has never once been the way this ends. It is written but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life, the cure in that verse is arrival and never once endurance, and the Spirit of God is saying that plainly here.

One book in the bag is a gate

Here is the mechanism, and it is a matter of physical layout.

Your bag holds one book, and that is the whole system.

A man who reads one thing at a time keeps one book, in one place, and it goes to work with him, and that arrangement has served you well for twenty years because a single book in a bag gets read on lunch breaks and on the bus and while waiting for people.

Which means the bag is not a shelf, it is a slot. And a slot with a stuck item in it does not slow the line down. It stops it entirely.

So the loss here is not one book. It is fourteen months of every other book, all of which have been standing behind a paperback with a bent corner.

You are looking at a stopped line and not a slow reader, and fourteen months has never once been how long that one book actually needed. Proverbs 13:12 names the harm in the deferral itself, and the Holy Spirit is present with a man who has carried the same bent corner three hundred times.

And there is a second thing, and it is why the gate never opened.

Every day the decision is small. Carry it again, read four pages, put it back. Nothing about that day is a crisis, and no single day is worth making a decision over. So the decision never gets made, and four hundred small days add up to a year and two months.

That is not weakness of will. It is that a stuck line never presents itself as an emergency on any given Tuesday.

You have four hundred small days behind you and no crisis in any of them, and a gate that never triggers an alarm has never once been a gate that opened by itself. The written word says the heart goes sick under the deferral and turns to a tree of life when the desire comes, and His Spirit is the one who opens a gate a man walked past for a year.

Put it down, and start another one

So here is the assignment, and it happens tonight rather than at the end of the month.

Put down the book that is not working tonight and start another one before you sleep.

Take it out of the bag. Not later, not at a chapter break, not after one more commute. Out of the bag tonight, and put it on a shelf.

And nobody is going to tell you to finish it first. Not one caveat about ninety pages to go, or how far the marker has already come, or how it would be a shame. It might be a shame. Out it comes anyway.

Then put another one in the bag tonight, and read ten pages of it before you sleep.

You have an arrival coming rather than a longer wait, and fourteen months of nearly have never once been the way this ends. His Spirit is on that tailgate now, and it is written that when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.

Here is why the swap is physical and immediate.

The gate is a slot with a book in it. Nothing changes until a different object is in that slot, and no amount of deciding accomplishes what one hand movement does. The bag has to have something else in it before tomorrow morning.

And ten pages of the new one tonight, so that tomorrow the bag contains something already begun rather than a decision waiting to be made.

You are able to change what is in the bag tonight, and one hundred and forty pages already read have never once obliged you to read the other ninety. Proverbs 13:12 says hope deferred maketh the heart sick, and the Holy Ghost is the one present with a man taking a bent paperback out of a work bag.

The sentence but I am so close is going to arrive while your hand is in the bag. You have been so close for eleven months. Take it out.

You have a line that starts moving tonight, and fourteen months of nearly has never once been worth one month of actually. It is written but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life, the arrival is the cure and the waiting is the sickness, and the Spirit of God is saying it over a tailgate tonight.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man who has carried the same book three hundred times.

You are a reader with a stopped line, and fourteen months of a bent corner has never once been a year you did not read. Nobody here is handing you a list, nobody here is mentioning your phone, and nobody here is going to tell you to finish it first. Proverbs 13:12 names the deferral rather than the denial as what makes a heart sick, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who opens a gate a man walked past four hundred times.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You are free of a slot with one stuck book in it, and being nearly finished has never once been a reason to stay there. It is written but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life, the cure in that proverb is arrival and never patience, and the Spirit of God is saying it over a work bag tonight.

Out of the bag. Something else in. Ten pages.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud on the tailgate or standing at the kitchen table with the bag open. Not because saying them makes anything move: the moving belongs to God, and He was calling arrival a tree of life long before anybody carried a paperback to work. You say them because you belong to Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture gives His people a mouth to agree with what He has already settled. What gets read next, and when, is His to work out in His own way and on His own clock, and I put no timetable on Him.

  1. Book in my bag since March, you are paper and you were never a line. Proverbs 13:12 says hope deferred maketh the heart sick, so by the Holy Spirit I take you out tonight in the name of Jesus and put another one in.
  2. Sentence that says I am nearly there, be quiet. The written word names the deferral and not the denial as the thing that makes a heart sick and calls arrival the tree of life, and by the Holy Spirit I am done letting one slot hold up fourteen months of reading.
  3. Father, You said the heart goes sick in the waiting and that the desire coming is a tree of life. Your word says but when the desire cometh, so by Your Spirit I swap what is in that bag tonight and read ten pages of it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
