Waiting For The Quiet House

This message is for the woman holding out for a silent room and an empty evening that never once arrives

You are waiting for an evening that has not happened since 2019.

The evening you are waiting for has a specific shape and you could describe it in detail. Everybody in bed or out. Nothing needing attention. A drink of something, a lamp, and no interruption for an hour and a half.

That is the condition, and it has been the condition for years, and it has been met about four times, and on three of those four you were too tired to read.

So the arithmetic is grim and nobody has said it out loud. The condition costs you roughly fifty evenings a year and pays out zero, and the book on the arm of the chair has been there since February.

Two things are not coming here, and you have met them both.

Nobody is handing you a list. Not a title, not an author, not a genre, and no shelf of what a woman ought to have read by now. Being handed one has never once opened a book, and mostly it adds a specific volume to the pile of things a person feels behind on.

And nobody is saying one word about your phone. You know about the phone. Everybody knows. Hearing it again from a stranger returns nothing at all.

What I want to look at is the condition, because I do not think the noise is the problem.

The waiting is the problem, and the waiting is what has to end tonight.

Waiting For The Quiet House

One thing is needful

There is a scene in Luke 10 that is almost always taught as a rebuke of busyness, and there is something more precise in it than that.

But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her. (Luke 10:42, King James Version)

Look at what Jesus actually says to Martha.

He does not tell her the meal does not matter. He does not tell her the house is unimportant or the guests can wait. He says one thing is needful, which is a statement about scale rather than a statement about the value of housework.

And then look at Mary's position in the scene. She is not in a quiet house. There is a meal being prepared, a sister moving around her audibly annoyed, and a room full of people. She is sitting in the middle of all of it.

You have something small that cannot be taken back, and fifty deleted evenings have never once been evenings you did not have. His Spirit is present in that kitchen now, which is why the good part in Luke 10:42 gets chosen with a sister audibly annoyed in the room.

That is the part nobody preaches, and it is the part you need.

Mary did not wait for the kitchen to finish. Nothing in that passage suggests she planned to sit down later once things had settled, and if she had, the whole scene never happens, because things did not settle, because things in a house with people in it do not settle.

You are able to choose the good part inside the noise, and a house that never goes quiet has never once been what stood between you and a page. Luke 10:42 has Mary sitting down while the meal is still being made and the annoyance is audible, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that available in a kitchen at seven in the evening.

There is one more clause and it is the one that settles the size of tonight.

Which shall not be taken away from her. It is small, it is chosen in the middle of a mess, and it is described as permanent. The scale of the thing has nothing to do with its durability.

You have something small that cannot be taken back, and the size of what you take tonight has never once decided whether it holds. It is written that Mary hath chosen that good part which shall not be taken away from her, the choosing happened with the kitchen still going, and the Spirit of God is saying that plainly here.

The condition is doing all the damage

Here is the mechanism, and it is worth seeing because the condition looks so reasonable.

A condition converts a small available thing into a large unavailable one.

Reading ten pages is available tonight. It is available in about eighty per cent of your evenings, in the noise, sitting on a stool at the counter, with somebody talking to you twice. That version costs almost nothing.

But the condition says reading means an hour and a half in a quiet room, and that version is available four times a year. So every evening the request comes in, gets compared to the condition, fails, and the whole activity gets marked unavailable for the night.

The condition is not protecting the quality of the reading. It is deleting the reading, fifty times a year, and it does it silently because failing to meet a condition does not feel like a decision.

You are not short of evenings, and a condition set in a different life has never once been the same thing as a requirement. Luke 10:42 puts the good part in the middle of a working kitchen, and the Holy Spirit is present with a woman who has been measuring every night against an hour and a half.

And there is a second layer, and it is the reason the condition has survived.

The condition preserves the memory of what reading used to be. Letting it go means admitting that reading now is a different, smaller, scrappier thing, and admitting that feels like a loss. So the condition is kept, out of loyalty to the old version, and the old version does not come, and the new one is not allowed in.

You have permission to read the small scrappy version, and the reading you used to do has never once had the authority to veto the reading available. The written word records a woman choosing a small thing in a busy room and calls it the needful one, and His Spirit is the one who releases a person from a condition nobody imposed but her.

Ten pages in the noise, and stop at ten

So here is the assignment, and both halves are instructions rather than suggestions.

Read ten pages tonight in whatever noise the house is making, and stop at ten even if you want to carry on.

In the noise. On the stool, at the counter, with the television on and somebody asking where their shoes are. Do not go anywhere quieter and do not wait for a gap.

Ten pages. And then stop, on purpose, mid-scene if that is where ten lands.

You are able to choose the needful thing in a loud room, and a house with people moving through it has never once been the wrong house. The Holy Spirit is the one at that counter with you, and Luke 10:42 has Mary sit down while the meal is still being made.

Here is why stopping is an instruction and not a kindness.

If tonight goes well and turns into forty pages, tomorrow the expectation is forty, and forty needs the quiet room again, and the condition is back inside a week with a new number on it. Stopping at ten is what keeps tomorrow small enough to happen.

And stopping while it is still good is what makes you want tomorrow. That want is the engine. A person who stops satisfied has nothing pulling them back; a person who stops slightly early has the next evening already half decided.

You are able to stop at ten while it is still good, and a scene left unfinished has never once been the same thing as a book abandoned. Luke 10:42 says one thing is needful and never once sets a length on it, and the Holy Ghost is the one present with a woman closing a book she is enjoying.

It will feel wrong. Closing something at ten pages when it has finally got interesting feels like a small self-inflicted injury. Do it anyway. It is the mechanism and it is the only part of this that is not obvious.

You have a good part chosen in the middle of a loud room, and the noise has never once been able to take it away from you. It is written which shall not be taken away from her, the permanence is attached to a small thing chosen badly timed, and the Spirit of God is attaching it here.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman waiting for an evening that has not happened since 2019.

You are a reader tonight in a loud house, and fifty deleted evenings have never once meant you had no time. Nobody here is handing you a list and nobody here is mentioning your phone. Luke 10:42 has Mary choose the good part with the meal still being made and her sister audibly annoyed, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who makes a small thing available in the middle of a mess.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You are free of a condition that has paid out four times in six years, and an hour and a half has never once been the unit reading came in. It is written that one thing is needful and that it shall not be taken away from her, the smallness of it is never once treated as a weakness, and the Spirit of God is saying that over a stool at a counter.

Ten pages. In the noise. Stop at ten. Tonight.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud at the counter with the book shut and the dishwasher still going. Not because saying them makes anything move: the moving belongs to God, and He was handing people small permanent things in busy houses long before Luke wrote this down. You say them because you belong to Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture gives His people a mouth to agree with what He has already settled. What the evenings turn into, and when, is His to work out in His own way and on His own clock, and I put no timetable on Him.

  1. Quiet house I have been waiting for, you are a condition and you were never required. Luke 10:42 says one thing is needful, so by the Holy Spirit I read ten pages tonight in the name of Jesus with the whole room going on around me.
  2. Loyalty to the reading I used to do, go. The written word has a woman choose the needful thing while the meal is still being made and her sister is audibly annoyed, and by the Holy Spirit I am done deleting fifty evenings a year to protect a memory.
  3. Father, You called a small thing chosen at a bad moment the needful one, and You said it could not be taken away. Your word says which shall not be taken away from her, so by Your Spirit I read ten pages in the noise tonight and stop at ten.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
