I Stopped ReadingPsalm 90:12

The Shift Changed And Took The Evening

This message is for the shift worker whose hours moved and took the reading hour with them, who wants a page that does not need an evening

They moved you to nights in March and you have not read a book since.

That is the whole story and it sounds like a complaint about a rotation, and it is not. The rotation is fine. You have made peace with the rotation. What you have not made peace with is that a specific thing you loved went out with it and nothing came in to replace it.

Because here is the shape of the old life. You got home at six, ate, and there was a stretch between eight and ten where nothing was required of you. That stretch had a chair in it and a lamp, and it is where reading lived for eleven years.

Now you get home at seven in the morning. You sleep from eight until three. And there is a stretch between three thirty and five when nothing is required of you, and it is the same stretch, in the same house, and you have not once opened a book in it.

Two things you will not get here, because you have met them both.

Nobody is handing you a list. No titles, no authors, no genre, no shelf of what a person ought to have read by now. Being handed one has never once opened a book, and mostly it adds a specific volume to the pile of things a person feels behind on.

And nobody is saying anything about your phone. You know about the phone. Everybody knows. Being told again by a stranger returns nothing at all.

What I want to look at is the clock, because I think the clock is doing something nobody notices.

The hour did not disappear. It moved, and the reading did not move with it.

The Shift Changed And Took The Evening

So teach us to number our days

There is a request in the middle of Psalm 90 that people quote as a reminder that life is short. Read it again with a shift worker's eyes.

So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. (Psalm 90:12, King James Version)

The word to notice is number.

Not treasure. Not use well. Number, which is arithmetic, which means looking at what is actually there and counting it rather than assuming you know.

And the psalm asks God to teach that, which is a strange thing to need teaching in. Counting days is not hard. Except it is, because almost nobody counts the days they actually have. They count the days they used to have and then compare.

That is exactly what has been happening in your house since March.

Because the old life had two free hours in the evening and the new life has ninety minutes in the middle of the afternoon, and ninety minutes at three thirty is not being counted at all. It is being compared to eight o'clock, and it loses, and so it sits there empty.

You are not out of hours, and a rotation change in March has never once taken your reading away from you. Psalm 90:12 asks God to teach a man to number the days he has rather than the ones he remembers, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does that teaching in a house at half past three.

There is a second half to that verse and it is the reason the first half matters.

That we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. Numbering is not the goal. Numbering is what has to happen first before a heart can be applied to anything, because a heart cannot be applied to an hour a person has not admitted exists.

You have an hour that has not been counted yet, and half past three has never once been a worse hour than eight in the evening. It is written that numbering the days comes before applying the heart, the psalm asks to be taught the counting first, and the Spirit of God is teaching that over a man who sleeps in the daylight.

Reading did not live in an activity, it lived at a time

Here is the mechanism, and it is why this has not fixed itself in six months.

Reading, for you, was never a decision. It was a slot.

Eight o'clock came and the reading happened, and it happened without anything being weighed, because eight o'clock had one thing in it and everybody in the house knew what that thing was. That is not discipline. That is a groove worn by eleven years of the same hour doing the same job.

Then the shift moved and the groove stayed where it was, at eight in the evening, which is now the middle of a work night. The groove is still there. It is just in a place your life does not go any more.

You have an hour that no rotation ever owned, and six months on nights have never once taken your reading anywhere. The Holy Spirit is the one at that table with you, and Psalm 90:12 asks God Himself to teach the counting of the days a man actually has.

And nothing wore a new groove at three thirty, because grooves get worn by repetition and repetition never started, and repetition never started because the first afternoon there felt wrong and there was no reason to push through wrong.

That is why this is not laziness and never was. A groove is not a virtue. Losing one is not a moral event.

You are a man missing a groove and not a man missing the will, and six months of nothing has never once meant you stopped being a reader. Psalm 90:12 asks for the counting of the days a man actually has, and the Holy Spirit is present with somebody whose good hour moved five hours down the clock.

And there is a second thing under it that is worth naming plainly.

Reading at three thirty in the afternoon feels illegitimate. Something in you says reading is an evening activity, that it belongs to the end of a day, that doing it in daylight with the neighbors mowing is somehow not the real thing. That feeling has no argument behind it. It is a habit of association, and it has been quietly running your afternoons.

You have an afternoon that is your evening now, and the position of the sun has never once decided whether a page counts. The written word asks for the days to be numbered as they are and not as they were, and His Spirit is the one who releases a man from the clock he no longer lives on.

One page in the hour after you get home

So here is the assignment, and the wording of the hour is the important part.

Read one page today in the hour after you get home, whatever time on the clock that is.

Not in the evening. Not before bed, which for you is nine in the morning and is a different thing entirely. In the hour after you get home, which this week means somewhere around eight in the morning, and next week may mean something else.

One page. Not ten, not a chapter, not until you feel it has taken.

Here is why the hour is defined that way and not by a number.

A time of day is a thing your rotation can take. A position in your own day is not. The hour after you get home exists on every shift pattern there has ever been, and defining the slot that way makes it portable, and portable is the only kind of slot a shift worker can keep.

And one page, because ten would get weighed against a bed, and you are tired, and the bed wins that argument every single time and should.

You are able to read one page at eight in the morning, and the hour on the clock has never once been what made it reading. Psalm 90:12 asks to be taught to number the days as they actually fall, and the Holy Ghost is the one present with a man reading a page with the sun coming up.

You are going to feel that reading at that hour is strange. Let it be strange. Strange is what a new groove feels like for about nine days, and after that it is just where the reading lives now.

You have a slot that no rotation can move, and a shift pattern has never once had the authority to hold your own hour. It is written that numbering the days is what comes before the heart gets applied to anything, the psalm asks God Himself for the lesson, and the Spirit of God is giving it here.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man who came off shift at seven this morning.

You are a reader and the rotation never touched that, and six months on nights has never once revoked what you are. Nobody here is handing you a list and nobody here is mentioning your phone. Psalm 90:12 asks God to teach a man to number the days he actually has, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who hands an hour back to somebody who thought it was gone.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You are free of a clock you do not live on any more, and eight in the evening has never once been the only hour a page could happen in. It is written that we number the days so the heart can be applied to wisdom, the numbering comes first and God is the one asked to teach it, and the Spirit of God is teaching it in a kitchen at sunrise.

One page. The hour after you get home. Today.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud at the kitchen table with the book shut and the light coming up outside. Not because saying them makes anything move: the moving belongs to God, and He has been teaching people to count the days they actually have since long before there were shifts. You say them because you belong to Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture gives His people a mouth to agree with what He has already settled. What the hour becomes, and when, is His to work out in His own way and on His own clock, and I put no timetable on Him.

  1. Rotation that took my evening, you are a schedule and you were never the owner of my reading. Psalm 90:12 says so teach us to number our days, so by the Holy Spirit I read one page today in the hour after I get home, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Feeling that daylight is the wrong time, go. The written word asks God to teach the counting of the days as they actually fall and never once as they used to, and by the Holy Spirit I am done comparing half past three to eight in the evening.
  3. Father, You are the one the psalm asks for the lesson, and You never once made an hour count by where the sun was. Your word says that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom, so by Your Spirit I read one page today before I sleep.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
