You read it four times last night and you could not have told anybody what it said.
Not because it was difficult. Because your eyes went over the words and your head was somewhere else entirely, and then you noticed, and went back to the top, and the same thing happened all the way down again.
Fourth time. And then you closed it and sat there for a while.
And somewhere in the last few weeks that has stopped being a fact about a bad night and started being a fact about you. Something along the lines of: I cannot even read any more.
Before anything else, one thing, because a man can arrive at a page about reading from anywhere. If what you are carrying has got heavier than a hard season, if you have been thinking about not being here at all, put this down and call or text 988 in the United States, or your own local crisis line wherever you are, today. This page cannot see you and is not qualified to. That call is.
Two things are also not coming here.
Nobody is handing you a list, and nobody is saying one word about your phone. You know about the phone. Everybody knows.
What I want to look at is what got concluded after the fourth reading, because a conclusion got drawn and it is not a true one.
A paragraph that will not stick is a fact about a hard month. It is not information about a man.

A bruised reed shall he not break
There is a line in Isaiah 42 about what He does with things that are already damaged, and the two images in it are both about not finishing something off.
A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth. (Isaiah 42:3, King James Version)
Take the two pictures one at a time.
A bruised reed. A reed that is already bent, already half broken, structurally useless as a reed. The obvious thing to do with it is snap it and get a new one, and the verse says He will not.
The smoking flax. A wick that has gone out and is producing smoke rather than light. Useless as a light. The obvious thing is to pinch it out, and the verse says He will not do that either.
Both images are things that have stopped performing. And in both cases the response named is a refusal to finish them off.
You are a bruised reed He will not break, and a paragraph that would not stay has never once made you useless to God. Isaiah 42:3 names two things that have stopped performing and refuses to finish either one, and the Holy Spirit is the one saying that over a chair at ten at night.
There is one more clause and it is not what people expect.
He shall bring forth judgment unto truth. The verse does not end with the reed being carefully mended and put back to work. It ends with Him getting on with what He is doing, and the reed is simply not broken along the way.
You have a God who is getting on with something and not stopping to assess you, and four readings of one paragraph have never once needed to be accounted for. It is written and the smoking flax shall he not quench, the refusal to finish it off is the whole of the response, and the Spirit of God is saying that plainly here.
Holding a sentence is the first thing grief takes
Here is the mechanism, and it is worth knowing because it will remove a fear.
Working memory goes first. That is what grief does, physiologically, and it is one of the most consistently reported effects there is.
The specific thing that fails is the holding of a sentence long enough to connect it to the next one. That is exactly what reading a paragraph requires, so reading is one of the first things to go, before the visible things go.
Which means what happened last night was not a failure. It was the predictable result of a body carrying something heavy, and it will be true for a while and then it will be less true, and there is nothing in it that says anything about your mind.
You are experiencing a body under load and not a decline, and four readings of a paragraph have never once been a measure of what you are able to do. Isaiah 42:3 refuses to break the thing that has stopped performing, and the Holy Spirit is present with a man who read the same lines four times and drew a conclusion.
And there is a second layer, and it is the one that matters most tonight.
The reading does not have to work. That is the part nobody says. If the paragraph will not stay, the assignment is not to make it stay. The assignment is fifteen minutes with a book, and whether anything is retained is not part of it and never was.
Nobody is being tested. There is no examination at the end of a hard month.
You have an assignment that does not require the page to stay, and a paragraph that went past has never once been a page that did not count. The written word names the reed and the wick and refuses to finish either one off, and His Spirit is the one who takes a test out of a hard month.
Fifteen minutes at a useful time
So here is the assignment, and it is deliberately not about understanding anything.
Read for fifteen minutes today at a time you would normally be doing something useful.
Fifteen minutes by the clock rather than by pages. That is the only measure tonight. Not ten pages, not a chapter, not until it starts to hold.
Fifteen minutes. If the same paragraph goes past four times, that is fifteen minutes and the assignment is done.
You are the bruised reed He refuses to break, and a sentence that would not stay has never once made anybody useless to God. His Spirit is in that room tonight, and it is written a bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench.
Here is why by the clock and not by pages.
Pages need the sentences to stay in order to count. Minutes do not. A man who sits with a book for fifteen minutes has done the whole thing whether four sentences went in or none, and taking the measure off the pages takes the examination out of the room.
And a useful slot, because the useful things have taken over the whole day and there is room in there.
You are able to sit with a book for fifteen minutes and understand nothing, and time with a page open has never once had to produce anything. Isaiah 42:3 says a bruised reed shall he not break, and the Holy Ghost is the one present with a man reading the same paragraph for the fifth time on purpose.
And nobody here is calling this a treatment. It is not going to help you carry what you are carrying and I will not pretend it will. It is a good thing, available in a bad month, that does not have to work.
You have a good thing that is under no obligation to help, and fifteen minutes has never once needed to fix anything to be worth taking. It is written he shall bring forth judgment unto truth, He is getting on with what He is doing and the reed is simply not broken along the way, and the Spirit of God is doing that here.
So here is what I believe is going out over a man on the fifth reading of the same paragraph.
You are the bruised reed He has refused to break, and four readings of one paragraph have never once been information about you. Nobody here is handing you a list, nobody here is mentioning your phone, and nobody here is calling reading a treatment for what you are carrying. Isaiah 42:3 names a bent reed and a smoking wick and answers both with a refusal to finish them off, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who takes an examination out of a hard month.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You are free of a measure that required the page to stick, and fifteen minutes has never once had to produce anything in order to have happened. It is written a bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench, both images are of things that stopped performing and neither one gets finished off, and the Spirit of God is saying it in a living room tonight.
Fifteen minutes. By the clock. Nothing retained.
Declare this over yourself
Say them out loud in the chair with the book shut on your knee. Not because saying them makes anything move: the moving belongs to God, and He was refusing to break bent reeds long before anybody could not hold a sentence in their head. You say them because you belong to Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture gives His people a mouth to agree with what He has already settled. When the sentences start staying again, and how, is His to work out in His own way and on His own clock, and I put no timetable on Him.
- Paragraph that will not stay in my head, you are four minutes and you were never a measure of me. Isaiah 42:3 says a bruised reed shall he not break, so by the Holy Spirit I sit with a book for fifteen minutes today in the name of Jesus and retain nothing at all.
- Conclusion I drew after the fourth reading, go. The written word names a bent reed and a smoking wick and answers both of them with a refusal to finish them off, and by the Holy Spirit I am done reading a body under load as a mind in decline.
- Father, You would not break the reed and You would not quench the wick, and then You carried on with what You were doing. Your word says he shall bring forth judgment unto truth, so by Your Spirit I take fifteen minutes today by the clock.
