Out Of Work And No Right To An Hour

You have been out of work for nine weeks and somewhere in there you stopped allowing yourself an hour.

It happened gradually and it was never decided. The first week you read in the afternoon like a man on holiday. By week three the afternoon was for applications, and by week five reading in daylight felt like a small offense, and now there is a rule running that you would deny if somebody stated it out loud.

The rule is: an hour that does not produce something is an hour you have not earned.

So the days are full of activity and most of it is thin. Applications reworked for the fourth time. Searching the same three sites. And no reading, because reading would be the one thing in the day that is honestly for nothing.

Before anything else, one thing, because a man can arrive at a page about reading from anywhere. If nine weeks has turned into something heavier than discouragement, if you have been thinking about not being here at all, put this down and call or text 988 in the United States, or your own local crisis line wherever you are, today. This page cannot see you and is not qualified to. That call is.

Two things are also not coming here.

Nobody is handing you a list, and nobody is saying one word about your phone. You know about the phone. Everybody knows.

What I want to look at is the rule, because it is not from God and it is doing real damage in a hard month.

An hour does not have to produce anything. He argues that from a bird.

Behold the fowls of the air

There is an instruction in Matthew 6 that tells people to look at something ordinary and draw a conclusion from it.

Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? (Matthew 6:26, King James Version)

Read the three things the birds do not do.

They sow not. They do not reap. They gather nothing into barns. Those are the three stages of producing: planting, harvesting, storing. All three are absent, and the absence is stated deliberately as the whole basis of the argument.

You are fed by a Father who never tied it to output, and nine weeks of producing nothing have never once forfeited an hour. The Holy Spirit is the one on that bench with you, and Matthew 6:26 names sowing and reaping and gathering as all three absent and feeds them anyway.

And then: yet your heavenly Father feedeth them.

So the feeding is not connected to the producing. That is the point being made, and it is being made about creatures whose entire day contains no output of any kind. The Father feeds them anyway, and the argument then goes upward: are ye not much better than they.

You are fed without producing anything, and nine weeks of no output has never once taken away a right to an hour. Matthew 6:26 names all three stages of production as absent and then says the Father feeds them anyway, and the Holy Spirit is the one saying that over an afternoon in week nine.

There is one more word in it and it is an instruction rather than an observation.

Behold. Look at them. The verse does not say think about God's provision in the abstract; it tells a person to go and look at a bird, on purpose, and let the sight do the arguing.

You have a case made out of something you can go and look at, and an unearned hour has never once needed a defense more complicated than that. It is written yet your heavenly Father feedeth them, the argument is built on creatures that store nothing at all, and the Spirit of God is saying that plainly here.

Thin activity is not the same as work

Here is the mechanism, and it is worth being exact because it is doing damage.

The rule has not made your days productive. It has made them full.

Look at what is actually in an afternoon now. The same three sites checked again. An application reworded. A list of people to contact who were contacted last week. None of that is work in any real sense; it is motion, and motion is what a person produces when a rule demands output and there is no output available.

And the motion has a cost, because it uses the same attention that reading would have used, and it returns nothing. So the day contains no work and no rest either, which is a worse arrangement than either one alone.

You are producing motion rather than work, and a full afternoon has never once been the same thing as an earned one. Matthew 6:26 puts the feeding beside creatures that neither sow nor reap nor gather, and the Holy Spirit is present with a man reworking an application for the fourth time.

And there is a second layer, and this one is the honest one.

The rule is not really about productivity. It is about standing. Nine weeks in, something in a man tries to establish that he is still somebody who works, and the way it does that is by refusing him anything a working man would call leisure.

Which means the fifteen minutes is being withheld as a kind of penance, and penance is not a thing anybody here is going to help you keep.

You have standing that does not come from output, and nine weeks without a job has never once changed what you are worth. The written word makes its case from birds that store nothing and then reasons upward to people, and His Spirit is the one who takes a penance out of a man's afternoon.

Fifteen minutes at a useful time

So here is the assignment, and the timing is the point.

Read for fifteen minutes today at a time you would normally be doing something useful.

Not in the evening once the day has been justified. Not after the applications. In the middle of the afternoon, in the slot where the third site would have been checked again.

Fifteen minutes. Then stop.

Here is why the useful slot.

Reading in the evening leaves the rule intact: it concedes that the day has to be earned first and that good things come afterward. Taking fifteen minutes out of the productive part is the only version of this that touches the rule.

And nothing is lost. The site will still be there. It has not changed since this morning, and it did not change the last four times.

You are able to read at two in the afternoon in week nine, and fifteen minutes has never once had to be earned before it was allowed. Matthew 6:26 says behold the fowls of the air, and the Holy Ghost is the one present with a man on a bench with a book at two in the afternoon.

And nobody here is calling this a strategy. It is not going to make you a better candidate and I am not going to pretend it will. It is a good thing, permitted in a hard month, for no reason except that good things do not have to be useful.

You have permission that is not attached to an outcome, and a good hour has never once needed to help in order to be yours. It is written are ye not much better than they, the whole argument rests on creatures with no barn at all, and the Spirit of God is saying it on a park bench today.
