I Stopped ReadingIsaiah 46:4

My Eyes Changed And I Stopped Quietly

This message is for the older reader whose sight changed and who quietly stopped reading rather than say so out loud

Nobody knows you stopped, because you did not announce it and there was nothing to announce.

It was not a decision. It went like this. The print in the paperback got small, and you held it further out, and then you started only reading in the good chair because that lamp is better, and then only on bright afternoons, and then only occasionally, and then not.

Four adjustments over about two years, each one sensible on its own, and at the end of them there is a woman in a house who used to read every day and does not.

And you have not told anybody. Not because it is shameful. Because it never came up, and because each individual adjustment was too small to mention, and by the time the total was worth mentioning it would have needed a whole conversation to explain.

Two things are not coming here, and you have met them both.

Nobody is handing you a list. Not a title, not an author, not a genre, and no shelf of what anybody ought to have read by now. Being handed one has never once got a book open.

And nobody is going to lecture you about your phone. You know about the phone. Everybody knows about the phone, and being told again by a stranger returns nothing at all.

What I want to look at is the quietness of it, because I think the quietness is the actual problem and not the eyes.

Nothing about this got solved, because nothing about it ever got said.

My Eyes Changed And I Stopped Quietly

Even to hoar hairs will I carry you

There is a sentence in Isaiah 46 that is spoken to people getting older, and it is not gentle in the way people expect. It is blunt.

And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you. (Isaiah 46:4, King James Version)

Count how many times He says carry.

I will carry you. I will bear. Even I will carry. Three times in one sentence, which in that book is not decoration. It is a thing being nailed down because somebody was going to doubt it.

And notice what surrounds it. In the verses just before, Isaiah is describing idols being loaded onto animals, and the animals are staggering under them, and the point is savage: the thing you carry cannot carry you.

Then God says the opposite about Himself, and He specifies the season. Even to hoar hairs. Even to gray hair, which is a plain physical detail about a body changing, and He puts it right in the sentence rather than speaking about old age in the abstract.

You are carried in the exact season the verse names, and eyes that changed at sixty one have never once moved you outside what God said He would carry. Isaiah 46:4 says even to hoar hairs will I carry you and it puts the physical detail in on purpose, and the Holy Spirit is the one saying that over a woman who reads in one chair now.

There is one more piece and it is the one that meets a quiet stopping.

I have made. That is the first clause of the carrying. He is not offering help with something He is unfamiliar with. He made the frame that is changing, and the changing was not a surprise to Him, and no report about it is required.

You have nothing to declare about a body He built, and two years of quiet adjustments have never once needed to be explained to Him first. It is written I have made, and I will bear, the making and the carrying sit in the same breath, and the Spirit of God is saying that plainly in a front room.

The adjusting was sensible and the silence was the cost

Here is the mechanism, and it is worth seeing because it is not about vision at all.

Every adjustment you made was correct. Holding the page further out is correct. Moving to the better lamp is correct. Reading in daylight is correct. Not one of those was a mistake.

The problem is what adjustments do when nobody hears about them.

Each one shrinks the space a little, and each one is individually reasonable, so no alarm goes off. And because no alarm goes off, nobody ever gets to the question that would have solved this in ten minutes, which is: what would it take to make the letters bigger.

You are carried in the season the verse names out loud, and eyes that changed have never once moved you outside what He said He would carry. The Holy Spirit is the one in that front room with you, and Isaiah 46:4 says carry three times in a single sentence so that nobody could get around it.

That question has about four answers and they are all boring and cheap and available. A brighter bulb. A larger print edition. A device that makes text any size at all. Somebody in the family who would set that up in an afternoon and be glad to be asked.

None of those got considered, because considering requires the problem to be visible, and the whole shape of a quiet stopping is that it stays invisible.

You are a woman with a solvable problem and not a woman at the end of her reading, and four sensible adjustments have never once added up to a verdict. Isaiah 46:4 has God specifying the gray haired season by name rather than talking around it, and the Holy Spirit is present with somebody who never mentioned it to anybody.

And here is the quieter layer, and it is the reason the silence held.

Saying it out loud makes it a category. Right now it is four small habits. Said out loud, it becomes my eyes are going, and that sentence carries a great deal more with it than a lamp, and it is easier to hold four habits than to hold that sentence at a family table.

You have permission to name a small mechanical problem without naming a season of decline, and asking for a brighter lamp has never once been a confession about your life. The written word names the gray hair out loud and puts a carrying around it, and His Spirit is the one who steadies somebody saying a plain thing at a table.

Better light, bigger letters, ten pages

So here is the assignment, and it is deliberately mechanical.

Get the book under a bright lamp tonight, or make the letters bigger by whatever means the house allows, and read ten pages.

Move the chair if it needs moving. Take the shade off. Put a stronger bulb in. Use the device that is somewhere in the house that will set text to any size at all. If somebody in the family would do it in four minutes, ask them, and do not explain more than the one sentence it takes.

Then read ten pages.

Here is why the light and not the willpower.

The reading did not stop because of interest. It stopped because of contrast, and contrast is a hardware problem with hardware answers. Applying resolve to a hardware problem is what a person does when the problem has been kept invisible, and it never once works.

And ten pages, so that the assignment does not turn into an evaluation of whether the eyes are what they were. That question is for somebody qualified on a different day. Tonight is a lamp and ten pages.

You are able to solve tonight with light rather than with resolve, and a page that got hard to see has never once been a page you lost interest in. Isaiah 46:4 says even to hoar hairs will I carry you, and the Holy Ghost is the one present with a woman moving a lamp at seven in the evening.

You may feel silly making a fuss over a bulb. Make the fuss. Two years of not making it is what is being undone, and a woman who moves a lamp tonight has undone the whole of it.

You have a God who named the gray haired season Himself and stayed in it, and a changing body has never once put you outside what He said He would carry. It is written I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you, the carrying is said three times in the one sentence, and the Spirit of God is saying it here.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who stopped reading and never said so.

You are a reader with a lamp problem, and two years of sensible adjustments have never once amounted to the end of anything. Nobody here is handing you a list and nobody here is mentioning your phone. Isaiah 46:4 names the gray haired season out loud and puts a threefold carrying around it, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who takes a thing out of the dark where it could not be solved.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You are free to ask for a brighter light without it meaning anything about your life, and a mechanical problem has never once been a season of decline. It is written I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you, He said carry three times in one sentence so that nobody could get around it, and the Spirit of God is carrying you tonight.

Better light. Bigger letters. Ten pages. Tonight.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud in the good chair under the new light with the book shut on your knee. Not because saying them makes anything move: the moving belongs to God, and He has been carrying people through changing bodies since long before Isaiah wrote it down. You say them because you belong to Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture gives His people a mouth to agree with what He has already settled. What your eyes do next, and when, is His to work out in His own way and on His own clock, and I put no timetable on Him.

  1. Small print that beat me without a word, you are ink and you were never a notice of retirement. Isaiah 46:4 says even to hoar hairs will I carry you, so by the Holy Spirit I get better light tonight in the name of Jesus and read ten pages under it.
  2. Two years of saying nothing to anybody, be over. The written word names the gray haired season out loud and never once talks around it, and by the Holy Spirit I am done keeping a solvable thing quiet because saying it would make it a category.
  3. Father, You said I have made and I will bear in the same breath, and You never once treated a changing body as news. Your word says even I will carry, and will deliver you, so by Your Spirit I move the lamp tonight and read.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
