The half hour was good and then you stood up out of the chair and it turned into something else.
Not while you were reading. While you were reading it was the best half hour you had had in about a month, and you knew it at the time, which does not usually happen at the moment because you are not aware of much of anything.
It was after. You closed the book and stood up and the thought that came was the list of everything you had not done, and the half hour stopped being something you had and became something you had taken.
And that has happened four or five times now, and the arithmetic of it means the good half hours are costing you something on the way out.
Before anything else, one thing, because a person can arrive at a page about reading from anywhere. If what is happening has got heavier than a hard season, if you have been thinking about not being here at all, put this down and call or text 988 in the United States, or your own local crisis line wherever you are, today. This page cannot see you and is not qualified to. That call is.
Two things are also not coming here.
Nobody is handing you a list, and nobody is saying one word about your phone. You know about the phone. Everybody knows.
What I want to look at is the moment of standing up, because something happens in that second and it is not the truth arriving.

A lamp unto my feet
There is a line in Psalm 119 about a lamp, and the size of the lamp is the part worth noticing.
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. (Psalm 119:105, King James Version)
Notice how small that lamp is when you actually look at it.
A lamp unto my feet is not a floodlight over a landscape. It is an oil lamp carried at about the height of a walking hand, and it shows the next yard of road and nothing further.
Which means the person holding it cannot see the destination, or the turn after this one, or whether the road improves beyond the bend. And that is how it is described, without apology, as the provision rather than as a shortfall in the provision.
You are given the next yard and not the whole road, and half an hour of light has never once been a smaller provision than a lit horizon. Psalm 119:105 names a lamp at foot height and calls that the provision rather than apologizing for its size, and the Holy Spirit is the one saying that over a chair and a closed book.
There is a second half and it is worth having beside the first.
And a light unto my path. Path, singular, and the one being walked. Not a map of the region. The light is on the actual ground under an actual foot, which is where a person's next step happens to be.
You have light on the ground you are standing on, and one good half hour has never once had to illuminate the rest of the year. It is written and a light unto my path, the light is on the ground beneath a foot rather than over a landscape, and the Spirit of God is saying that plainly here.
The tally arrives at the door, not in the chair
Here is the mechanism, and the timing of it is the tell.
The list does not arrive while you read. It arrives when you stand up.
That is worth sitting with, because a true fact about a half hour would be equally true during it. The list is not information about whether the reading was good; it is what shows up at the transition, every time, on cue, when attention comes back into the room.
Which makes it a doorway event rather than a verdict. And a doorway event that arrives on schedule after every single good thing is not honesty. It is a habit.
You are meeting a habit at the door and not a verdict, and a half hour has never once turned into a theft on the way out of a chair. Psalm 119:105 gives light for the next yard and calls that enough, and the Holy Spirit is present with a woman standing up out of a chair with a list arriving.
And there is a second layer, and it is the one that has been quietly draining the good.
Because the list comes after, the good half hour never gets to be simply a good half hour. It gets audited retrospectively, every time, and a thing that is always audited on the way out stops being restful even while it is happening.
That is what has begun to change in the last month. Not the reading. The exit.
You have a good thing that does not require an audit at the door, and a half hour of light has never once had to be paid for on the way out. The written word puts the lamp at foot height and calls the next yard the provision, and His Spirit is the one who takes an audit off a doorway.
Fifteen minutes at a useful time
So here is the assignment, and it is built around the exit rather than the reading.
Read for fifteen minutes today at a time you would normally be doing something useful.
Fifteen rather than thirty, on purpose. In a slot that had a job in it, so that the reading is not being taken out of the leftovers.
And here is the part that matters. When the fifteen minutes are up, get up and do one small thing off the list immediately. One. The smallest one. Then stop.
Here is why the one small thing.
The list arrives at the door whatever happens, so the assignment does not try to stop it. It gives it something to meet. One item done immediately after, and the list has been answered rather than argued with, and the half hour does not have to be defended.
And nobody here is calling this a technique for getting through what you are in. It is not treatment, and reading is not going to carry this for you, and I will not pretend otherwise. It is a good thing, permitted in a hard month, that does not have to work.
You are able to take fifteen minutes and answer the door with one small thing, and a good quarter of an hour has never once needed defending. Psalm 119:105 says thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and the Holy Ghost is the one present with a woman getting up and doing one small thing on purpose.
And do not extend it to thirty because the fifteen went well. Fifteen is the size that survives a bad week, and this is a bad week and there may be several.
You have a lamp at foot height and a full provision in it, and the next yard has never once been a lesser thing than the whole road. It is written thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path, the lamp lights the ground under a foot and is called the provision, and the Spirit of God is saying it in a chair today.
So here is what I believe is going out over a woman standing up out of a chair with a list arriving.
You are holding a lamp that lights the next yard, and one good half hour has never once been something taken from anybody. Nobody here is handing you a list, nobody here is mentioning your phone, and nobody here is calling reading a treatment for what you are carrying. Psalm 119:105 puts the lamp at the height of a walking hand and calls the next yard of road the provision rather than a shortfall in it, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who takes an audit off a doorway.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You are free of a tally that arrives on cue, and a good thing has never once had to be paid for on the way out of the chair. It is written thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path, the light is on the actual ground under an actual foot and nowhere further, and the Spirit of God is saying it over that chair today.
Fifteen minutes. Then one small thing. Immediately.
Declare this over yourself
Say them out loud in the chair with the book shut and the list arriving. Not because saying them makes anything move: the moving belongs to God, and He was giving people light for the next yard long before anybody stood up out of a chair with a list. You say them because you belong to Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture gives His people a mouth to agree with what He has already settled. What comes of the month, and when, is His to work out in His own way and on His own clock, and I put no timetable on Him.
- Thought that came when I stood up, you are a tally and you were never the truth about that half hour. Psalm 119:105 says thy word is a lamp unto my feet, so by the Holy Spirit I read fifteen minutes today in the name of Jesus and then do one small thing straight after.
- Audit that meets me at every doorway, go. The written word puts the lamp at foot height and calls the next yard of road the provision rather than a shortfall in it, and by the Holy Spirit I am done paying for something I was allowed on the way out of a chair.
- Father, You gave a lamp for the feet and a light for the path underneath them and You never once apologized for the size of it. Your word says and a light unto my path, so by Your Spirit I take fifteen minutes today and let the next yard be enough.
