It Feels Selfish And It Is Not

You sat down with a book on Tuesday and you were back up inside four minutes and nobody had asked you for anything.

That is the part worth noticing. Nobody called. Nothing burned. There was no crisis in those four minutes. You sat down, and something in you produced the word selfish, and you got up and found something to do.

It has been a hard year in your house and you have been the one carrying it. Everybody needs something by seven, and you have been supplying it, and you are good at it, and none of that is the problem.

The problem is that twenty minutes for yourself has become unavailable, and it did not become unavailable because there is no time. It became unavailable because there is a word attached to it.

Before anything else, one thing, because a man can arrive at a page about reading from anywhere. If carrying this has turned into something heavier, if you have been thinking about not being here at all, put this down and call or text 988 in the United States, or your own local crisis line wherever you are, today. This page cannot see you and is not qualified to. That call is.

Two things are also not coming here.

Nobody is handing you a list, and nobody is saying one word about your phone. You know about the phone. Everybody knows.

What I want to look at is the word, because it arrived without evidence and it has been running your evenings for a year.

Come apart and rest a while

There is an instruction in Mark 6 given at a moment when it makes no sense at all, and the timing is the whole point.

And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat. (Mark 6:31, King James Version)

Read the reason clause, because it is doing the opposite of what a reason clause normally does.

For there were many coming and going. That is why He tells them to withdraw. Not once the crowd thins out. The crowd is the reason to go, and the crowd is still there when they leave.

And notice the detail Mark keeps: they had no leisure so much as to eat. So the situation was genuinely pressing. People genuinely needed things. And into that, He says come apart and rest a while.

You are being told to withdraw while the demand is still running, and a hard year has never once been a reason to cancel a rest. Mark 6:31 gives the crowd as the reason to go apart rather than as the reason to stay, and the Holy Spirit is the one saying that over a man who got up after four minutes.

There is one more thing in it that settles the word selfish.

He is the one who says it. Nobody asks for the break, and nobody negotiates it, and nobody has to justify wanting it. The instruction to rest comes from outside the tired people and arrives as a command rather than as a concession.

You have a rest that was commanded rather than requested, and taking twenty minutes has never once been a thing you had to argue for. It is written come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while, the instruction comes from Him and not from the tired men, and the Spirit of God is saying that plainly here.

The word arrived with no evidence

Here is the mechanism, and it deserves to be said plainly because it is a slander.

The word selfish means taking something from somebody. That is the whole content of it.

So test it. In those four minutes on Tuesday, what was taken and from whom. Nobody was waiting. Nothing was undone that would not still be undone at four minutes past. The house was in exactly the same condition when you got up as when you sat down.

Nothing was taken. Which means the word does not apply, and it has been applying itself anyway, roughly every evening, for a year.

You are being accused by a word that cannot name a victim, and twenty minutes has never once been taken from anybody in your house. Mark 6:31 sends people away to rest with the crowd still coming and going, and the Holy Spirit is present with a man who got up after four minutes with nothing asked of him.

And there is a second layer, and it is where the word came from.

A hard year makes a man useful, and being useful is how he holds it together. And after long enough, useful stops being what he does and becomes what he is, and anything that is not useful starts to feel like a threat to the whole arrangement.

That is not selflessness. It is a man who has fused his identity to his output, and the word selfish is what that fusion produces whenever he stops.

You have an identity that does not rest on your usefulness, and a year of carrying it has never once made rest into a threat. The written word has the rest commanded by Christ Himself in the middle of the demand, and His Spirit is the one who separates a man from what he produces.

Fifteen minutes at a useful time

So here is the assignment, and the slot is chosen to break the fusion.

Read for fifteen minutes today at a time you would normally be doing something useful.

Not once everything is done, because everything is not going to be done, not this year. Take a slot with a real job in it. The dishes, the email, the thing on the list that has been on the list since Sunday.

Fifteen minutes. Then get up and do the thing.

You are sent away to rest by Christ Himself, and a hard year has never once been a reason to cancel it. The Holy Spirit is the one at that table with you, and Mark 6:31 gives the crowd as the reason to go apart rather than as the reason to stay.

Here is why a useful slot rather than a gap.

Reading in a gap concedes the arrangement: that a man may have what is left over once the useful is finished. This year there is nothing left over, so that arrangement produces nothing, which is exactly what it has produced.

One slot with a job in it. The job waits fifteen minutes and nothing is lost, and the word selfish gets tested against an actual case for the first time.

You are able to take fifteen minutes out of a job that could have been done, and one slot given to a book has never once been a slot stolen. Mark 6:31 says come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while, and the Holy Ghost is the one present with a man sitting down while the list is still on the counter.

The word is going to arrive around minute two. Let it arrive, and then ask it who it thinks you took the fifteen minutes from. It will not have an answer, because there is not one.

You have a rest that Christ commanded to tired men with a crowd still waiting, and twenty minutes has never once needed to wait until everything was finished. It is written for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat, the pressure is the reason He sends them and not the reason He keeps them, and the Spirit of God is saying it in a hard year today.
