Ten PagesIsaiah 28:10

If I Cannot Read For An Hour I Do Not Bother

This message is for the man who discounts anything short, who wants to believe that ten pages counts as reading

You picked it up at ten to eleven and you put it down at eleven minutes to.

Here is the order of what happened, and it happens about four nights out of seven. You got into bed. You saw the book sitting there. You thought about it, and then you ran the numbers: it is nearly eleven, you are up again at six, and by the time you got into it properly there would be fifteen minutes.

And fifteen minutes is not really reading.

So there is no point starting, and the book went back on the table where it was, and then you were awake for forty minutes with your phone.

That is not a confession. It is just the actual sequence. And the strange part is that if somebody asked you the next day whether you have time to read, you would say no, with complete confidence, and you would believe it while you were saying it.

Two things are not coming here, and you have met them both.

Nobody is handing you a list. Not a title, not an author, not a genre, and no shelf of what a man ought to have read by now. Being handed one has never once opened a book, and mostly it adds one more thing to be behind on.

And nobody is saying one word about your phone. You know about the phone. Everybody knows. Being told again by a stranger returns nothing at all.

What I want to look at is the calculation, because I think there is a threshold in it that nobody ever set on purpose.

Fifteen minutes did not fail to be enough time. It failed to clear a bar, and the bar has no author.

If I Cannot Read For An Hour I Do Not Bother

Here a little, and there a little

There is a verse in Isaiah 28 that describes how something gets built into a person, and the shape of the sentence is doing the thing it describes.

For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little. (Isaiah 28:10, King James Version)

Read it out loud once and listen to the construction.

It is built out of small repeated units, stacked. Precept upon precept. Line upon line. And the form of the verse arrives a little at a time, laid one upon another, which is exactly the method it is naming.

You have the method itself and not a fallback, and a small piece has never once been an apology for a larger one. His Spirit is at that bedside now, and it is written precept upon precept, line upon line, here a little, and there a little.

Then the last clause names the scale outright. Here a little, and there a little.

Not here a lot. Not in protected blocks with the door shut. A little in one place and a little in another, scattered rather than gathered, and that is presented as the method rather than as a fallback for people who could not manage the proper way.

You are being handed the actual method, and fifteen minutes has never once been a compromised version of an hour. Isaiah 28:10 builds the thing out of small repeated pieces and names the scale as here a little and there a little, and the Holy Spirit is the one saying that over a man at ten to eleven with the book still on the table.

There is one more thing in that verse and it is an absence.

There is no clause anywhere in it suggesting the small pieces are second best. No apology, no qualifier, no note that a larger portion would have been better if it had been available. The little is simply how it is done.

You have no apology owed for a small portion, and a little here and a little there has never once been the shape of a man who gave up. It is written line upon line, line upon line, here a little, and there a little, the verse never once ranks the little under the much, and the Spirit of God is saying that plainly here.

The threshold has no author

Here is the mechanism, and it comes down to one number nobody chose.

There is a minimum in your head below which reading does not count, and it sits somewhere around forty minutes.

Ask where it came from and there is no answer. Not a teacher. Not a book about books. Not a considered position anybody would defend if somebody pushed on it. It arrived at some point, probably out of the way reading felt at nineteen with whole afternoons available, and it has been running the gate ever since.

And a threshold does one thing: it turns every available quantity into a zero. Fifteen minutes is not fifteen minutes worth of reading in that system. It is nothing, and nothing is not worth starting.

Which is why the phone gets the forty minutes. Not because it beat the book on merit. The book never entered the competition, because it was disqualified at the gate for arriving in the wrong size.

You are being stopped at a gate rather than running out of time, and fifteen minutes has never once been the reason nothing got read. Isaiah 28:10 names the little as the method itself, and the Holy Spirit is present with a man whose calculation happens before any choosing does.

And there is a second layer, and it is the expensive one.

Because the threshold is invisible, the conclusion drawn is about time. I have no time. And that sentence is not true, and you would defend it sincerely, and every night it gets more evidence attached to it, because every night another fifteen minutes goes uncounted.

Four nights a week for a year is about fifty hours, filed under no time.

You have fifty hours a year that got called nothing, and a bar with no author has never once had the right to disqualify an evening. The written word lays the thing down line upon line and here a little and never once sets a minimum, and His Spirit is the one who takes an unexamined number off a man.

Ten pages however late it is

So here is the assignment, and the phrase however late is the mechanism.

Read ten pages tonight however late it is, and stop at ten even if you want to carry on.

However late. Ten to eleven. Quarter past. Half past eleven if that is when you get into bed. No calculation is run and no clock is consulted.

Ten pages. Counted. Then closed.

Here is why the clock has to be taken out of it.

You are given the method rather than a concession, and fifteen minutes have never once been the compromised version of an hour. The Holy Spirit is the one at that bedside with you, and Isaiah 28:10 lays the whole thing down here a little and there a little with no apology in it.

The gate opens when a quantity gets compared to a threshold. Remove the comparison and the gate has nothing to do. Ten pages is a fixed thing that does not vary with what time it is, which means there is nothing to weigh and nothing to decline.

And stopping at ten, because if tonight becomes thirty then tomorrow the threshold comes back with a new number on it, and a threshold with a new number is the same gate in a different coat.

You are able to open a book at ten to eleven without consulting the clock, and the time on it has never once decided whether the pages went in. Isaiah 28:10 says here a little, and there a little, and the Holy Ghost is the one present with a man reading ten pages at twenty past eleven.

The sentence not really reading is going to arrive around page three. Let it arrive and do not answer it. It has been running this gate for years on no authority at all.

You have a method that is built out of little pieces on purpose, and stacking a little on a little has never once been the same thing as settling. It is written precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept, the whole verse is small units laid one on another, and the Spirit of God is laying them here.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man who picked it up at ten to eleven and put it down again.

You are a reader who keeps getting stopped at a gate, and fifty hours a year have never once been the same thing as no time. Nobody here is handing you a list and nobody here is mentioning your phone. Isaiah 28:10 names precept upon precept and line upon line and here a little and there a little as the method rather than the fallback, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who takes an unauthored threshold off a man's evening.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You are free of a minimum nobody ever set, and fifteen minutes has never once been a quantity worth throwing away. It is written here a little, and there a little, the verse is built out of the small repeated pieces it is describing and it apologizes for none of them, and the Spirit of God is saying that over a bedside table tonight.

Ten pages. However late. Stop at ten.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud sitting on the edge of the bed with the book shut in your hand. Not because saying them makes anything move: the moving belongs to God, and He was laying things down line upon line long before anybody owned a clock. You say them because you belong to Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture gives His people a mouth to agree with what He has already settled. What the nights turn into, and when, is His to work out in His own way and on His own clock, and I put no timetable on Him.

  1. Calculation I run at ten to eleven, you are arithmetic and you were never a verdict. Isaiah 28:10 says here a little, and there a little, so by the Holy Spirit I read ten pages tonight in the name of Jesus without once looking at the time.
  2. Threshold that nobody ever set, go. The written word builds the whole thing out of precept upon precept and line upon line and never once sets a minimum on any of it, and by the Holy Spirit I am done calling fifty hours a year no time.
  3. Father, You laid it down a little here and a little there and You never once apologized for the size of the pieces. Your word says line upon line, line upon line, so by Your Spirit I read ten pages tonight however late it is.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
