I Keep Going Back To The Same One

You know roughly what is on the page before you turn it, and you know exactly how the whole thing ends, and you have known for about nine years.

You started it again last month and you told nobody.

Because when somebody asks what you are reading you do not say the true thing. You have a substitute ready. You name the one you started in the spring and did not finish, or you say you are between things, and you move the conversation along.

That substitute has been ready for years. Which means the reading is fine and the answer is the part that has gone wrong.

Two things are not coming here, and you have met them both.

Nobody is handing you a list. Not a title, not an author, not a genre, and no shelf of what anybody ought to have read by now. Being handed one has never once opened a book.

And nobody is saying one word about your phone. You know about the phone. Everybody knows. Being told again by a stranger returns nothing at all.

What I want to look at is why the true answer needs a substitute, because there is an assumption behind that and Deuteronomy contradicts it directly.

He shall read therein all the days of his life

There is an instruction in Deuteronomy 17 about a king and a book, and the arrangement it describes is one book for a lifetime.

And it shall be with him, and he shall read therein all the days of his life: that he may learn to fear the LORD his God, to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them. (Deuteronomy 17:19, King James Version)

One book. For a whole life.

Not read it and move along. Not get through it and be able to show that he has. It shall be with him, which is a physical object staying near a man for decades, and he reads in it all the days of his life.

And look at the reason given for the reading. That he may learn to fear the LORD his God, to keep all the words, to do them. That is formation, and formation is what repetition does. It was never acquisition.

You are doing formation and not failing at acquisition, and nine years with one book has never once been a thing to keep quiet about. Deuteronomy 17:19 sets one book beside a man for the whole of his life and gives formation as the reason, and the Holy Spirit is the one saying that over a spine cracked in the same three places.

There is one more thing worth having in it and it is the strongest part.

All the days of his life. Not a season, not a course of study, not until he has it. All the days, which means the returning never stops being the right thing, and there is no point at which a man is supposed to have finished with it and moved on to something else.

You have a returning that never stops being the right thing, and going back has never once been preparation for something new. It is written that he may learn to fear the LORD his God, the reason is formation and the timeframe is a whole life, and the Spirit of God is saying that plainly here.

Acquisition and formation are two different activities

Here is the mechanism, and once the two are separated the substitute answer becomes unnecessary.

There are two things a person can do with a book and only one of them is generally recognized.

The first is acquisition. Find out what is in it. And having found out, the book is finished, and the next one is the point, and a person who goes back to a book they have already extracted looks like somebody circling.

The second is formation. Return to the same thing repeatedly, not to learn what is in it, but because the returning does something to the person doing it. And on that activity a book already read is not spent. It is the only kind of book that works.

You have been doing the second one for nine years while answering to the standards of the first, and the substitute answer is what that mismatch produces.

You are doing the second thing and being judged by the first, and a book already read has never once been a book that was spent. Deuteronomy 17:19 gives formation as the reason and a lifetime as the term, and the Holy Spirit is present with a man who has had a substitute answer ready for years.

And there is a second layer, and it is the thing that makes nine years make sense.

That book has not changed. You have. Every time you have gone back to it you have brought a different man, and so you have not read that book nine times. You have read nine different books, because the reader was different every time, and the fixed text is what made the difference visible.

You have nine different readings and not one repeated, and a fixed book has never once given the same thing twice to a man who moved. The written word keeps the book beside the man all his days and names formation as the point, and His Spirit is the one who separates two activities that were never the same.

Ten pages of the one you already know

So here is the assignment, and there is a sentence attached to it.

Read ten pages of a book you already know.

That one. The nine years one. Cracked in the same three places. Not the one you started in the spring, and not this one framed as a last visit before you get on with the other.

Ten pages, deliberately, tonight.

And when somebody next asks what you are reading, say the true thing. The title, and the number of times, in one sentence, with no defense attached.

Here is why the sentence.

The reading has been fine for nine years. What has been costing you is the substitute, because a man who has a cover story ready for a good thing is carrying a small weight every single time the subject comes up, and the weight is entirely made of the cover story.

Say the true thing once and it goes. The reaction will not be what the substitute has been protecting you from.

You are able to say the true answer once, and nine years of one book has never once needed a cover story. Deuteronomy 17:19 says and he shall read therein all the days of his life, and the Holy Ghost is the one present with a man saying the real title out loud for the first time in years.

And keep going back. Nobody is asking you to finish with it, and Deuteronomy does not put an end date on the arrangement anywhere.

You have one book beside you for a whole life, and returning has never once been the smaller half of reading. It is written and it shall be with him, and he shall read therein all the days of his life, the term is a lifetime and the reason is formation, and the Spirit of God is saying it in that chair today.
