I Am The Thing That Changed

You read chapter eleven again last week and it was not the chapter you remembered, and the words had not moved.

That is the strange part, and it is the reason this page exists. You know the book. You have read it three times. And chapter eleven, which you have always thought of as the slow one, landed this time in a way it never has, and you sat there afterward slightly disoriented.

And then a suspicion arrived. That you were imagining it. That the sensation of a book being different is a trick of memory, and that nothing had actually happened, and that a woman claiming a book had changed for her is a woman being a little precious about a paperback.

Two things are not coming here, and you have met them both.

Nobody is handing you a list. Not a title, not an author, not a genre, and no shelf of what anybody ought to have read by now. Being handed one has never once opened a book.

And nobody is saying one word about your phone. You know about the phone. Everybody knows. Being told again by a stranger returns nothing at all.

What I want to look at is the suspicion, because the change is real, and Scripture says exactly where it is located.

We are changed from glory to glory

There is a sentence at the end of 2 Corinthians 3 about what happens to a person who keeps looking at the same thing.

But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. (2 Corinthians 3:18, King James Version)

Read where the change is located.

Not in the glass. The glory of the Lord does not change; that is the fixed thing in the sentence. The change is in the ones beholding, and it is stated as a fact about them rather than as a possibility.

And read the shape of it. From glory to glory. That is a sequence, which means it is happening in stages, over time, and a person somewhere along that sequence is genuinely not the person who was there earlier.

You are the thing that changed and not the one imagining it, and a book that landed differently has never once been a trick of your memory. 2 Corinthians 3:18 puts the change in the ones beholding rather than in the thing beheld and states it as a fact, and the Holy Spirit is the one saying that over chapter eleven.

There is one more clause and it settles who did it.

Even as by the Spirit of the Lord. The changing is not something the person managed. It is attributed, in the same sentence, to the Spirit, which means the difference you noticed last week is evidence of something being done to you rather than of you inventing something.

You have a change that was worked in you rather than imagined by you, and noticing it has never once been being precious about anything. It is written even as by the Spirit of the Lord, the changing is attributed to Him and not to the effort of the one beholding, and the Spirit of God is saying that plainly here.

The fixed text is the instrument

Here is the mechanism, and it is the useful part.

A book already read is a measuring instrument, and it works precisely because it does not move.

That is why the difference is detectable at all. If you had read a new book last week, any new response would be a response to new material and would tell you nothing about yourself. Chapter eleven has not changed one word in four years, which means every bit of the difference is on your side of the page, and the amount of it is measurable.

So the reread is not a lesser activity than a first read. It is the only activity that can show a person what four years did to them, and there is no substitute for it anywhere.

You are holding a measuring instrument, and a reread has never once been a lesser thing than a first reading. 2 Corinthians 3:18 keeps the glory fixed and puts all the movement in the beholder, and the Holy Spirit is present with a woman disoriented by a chapter she thought she knew.

And there is a second layer, and it is where the suspicion came from.

There is no ordinary word for what happened to you last week. People say a book has aged well or has not, which puts the change in the book. Nobody says: I have moved four years and I can measure it against page two hundred.

So a real experience arrived with no vocabulary attached, and experiences with no vocabulary get suspected, because a person cannot hold them steady long enough to look at them.

You have a real experience with no name attached, and a thing with no vocabulary has never once been a thing you invented. The written word keeps the glass fixed and locates the change in the ones looking and credits it to the Spirit, and His Spirit is the one who tells a woman what actually happened.

Ten pages of the one you already know

So here is the assignment, and it goes back to the same chapter.

Read ten pages of a book you already know.

Chapter eleven. The same ten pages that landed differently last week. Not a new book, and not the next chapter to move on.

Ten pages, and this time read them with the question in hand.

You are the thing that moved, and a chapter that landed differently has never once been a trick of a memory. The Holy Spirit is the one in that chair with you, and 2 Corinthians 3:18 keeps the glory fixed and puts every bit of the change in the ones beholding it.

Here is why the same ten again.

Last week the difference took you by surprise, and a surprise is hard to examine. Reading them again deliberately, with the question in your hand, is what turns a disorienting experience into something you can actually see, and once you can see it the suspicion has nothing to work with.

And notice one specific thing: a sentence that meant nothing before and means something now. One. That sentence is the measurement, and it is the answer to the question of whether you imagined it.

You are able to read the same ten pages on purpose and find the measurement, and a sentence that means something now has never once been a sentence you invented. 2 Corinthians 3:18 says are changed into the same image from glory to glory, and the Holy Ghost is the one present with a woman reading chapter eleven again with the question in her hand.

And if it is flat this time, that is information too. Nothing about the assignment requires it to happen twice.

It is written but we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, the glory is the fixed thing and the beholders are the ones who move, and the Spirit of God is saying it in that chair today.
