Reading AloudJob 2:13

Reading To Somebody Who Cannot Answer

This message is for the man reading aloud to somebody who cannot respond, and doubting the whole thing because there is no answer

You read a page out loud yesterday and he said nothing, and then you sat there and wondered what you were doing.

Not in despair. In the ordinary way a person wonders about a thing that produces no feedback at all. You read, and there was no reaction, and there is never going to be a reaction, and after a while a man asks himself whether an activity with nothing coming back is an activity.

And then a worse thought arrives underneath it. That reading aloud in that room might be something you are doing for yourself rather than for him, and that you would not be able to tell the difference.

Two things are not coming here, and you have met them both.

Nobody is handing you a list. Not a title, not an author, not a genre, and no shelf of what anybody ought to have read by now. Being handed one has never once opened a book.

And nobody is saying one word about your phone. You know about the phone. Everybody knows. Being told again by a stranger returns nothing at all.

What I want to look at is the silence, because the silence is being read as a verdict on the hour, and Scripture has a room like that in it.

Reading To Somebody Who Cannot Answer

None spake a word

There is a scene at the end of Job 2 that is remembered for what the friends did later and is worth reading for what they did first.

So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great. (Job 2:13, King James Version)

Read what is recorded.

They sat down with him. Seven days and seven nights. And none spake a word.

That is the whole activity. No conversation, no exchange, no response from anybody, and Scripture writes it down and gives the duration, which is what a text does with something that counted.

And notice the reason given for the silence. For they saw that his grief was very great. The silence was a response to what they were looking at, and it was the right response, and the sitting continued through it.

You are doing what those men did for seven days, and a page with nothing coming back has never once been an activity that did not happen. Job 2:13 records the sitting and the silence and gives the duration of both, and the Holy Spirit is the one saying that over a chair beside a bed.

There is one more thing worth having, and it is what the passage does not do.

It does not measure the seven days by what Job said back. There is no note anywhere about whether the sitting reached him or whether he was aware of it. The record is that they sat, and the sitting is what is in the text.

You have hours that are on the record without anything coming back, and silence has never once been the same thing as an hour that failed. It is written and none spake a word unto him, the sitting is what gets written down and no response is recorded anywhere, and the Spirit of God is saying that plainly here.

Feedback and value are not the same thing

Here is the mechanism, and it is a habit of measurement.

Almost everything a person does gives feedback, and feedback is how we know a thing worked.

You talk and somebody answers. You cook and somebody eats. You do the job and somebody says so, or does not, and even the not saying is a signal. Feedback is so constant that it becomes invisible, and its absence is genuinely disorienting.

You have hours that Scripture would have written down, and a silence has never once been an hour that did not happen. The Holy Spirit is the one in that chair with you, and Job 2:13 records seven days of sitting and gives the duration and not one word of reply.

So an hour with no feedback at all does not merely feel odd. It feels unverified, and unverified starts to feel like unreal, and after a few weeks a man begins to suspect the hour of not existing.

That is not doubt about the person in the bed. It is a nervous system that has never had to work without a signal.

You are working without a signal and not without a result, and no feedback has never once meant nothing happened. Job 2:13 records the sitting without recording one word of response to it, and the Holy Spirit is present with a man reading into a silence in the middle of an afternoon.

And there is a second layer, and it is worth answering directly.

The worse thought was that you might be doing it for yourself. Take that seriously for a second and then look at what it would mean. If reading aloud in that room gives you something, that is not a fault. It is what happens when a person keeps company with somebody they love.

Nobody sat with Job for seven days and got nothing out of it. That is not how sitting with people works, and the fact that it goes both ways has never made it selfish.

You have permission to get something out of it, and receiving in that room has never once made the hour about you. The written word writes down seven days of silent sitting as an act worth recording, and His Spirit is the one who takes a suspicion off a man in a chair.

One page out loud tonight

So here is the assignment, and it does not change the room at all.

Read one page out loud to somebody in your house tonight.

One page. In that room, to him, if that is where the chair is. Or to whoever else is in the house, if one instance of it landing somewhere that answers back is what is needed.

Either is the assignment.

Here is why either.

If the doubt is about whether reading aloud works at all, one page to somebody who answers settles that in ninety seconds. And if the doubt is only about that room, then one page in that room, deliberately, with the silence expected rather than measured, is the thing that needs doing.

And afterward, do not check. Do not run the assessment. The page happened. That is the entire content of the assignment.

You are able to read one page and skip the assessment, and a page read into a silence has never once needed to be verified. Job 2:13 says and none spake a word unto him, and the Holy Ghost is the one present with a man reading one page out loud in a quiet room and not checking afterward.

And if you want to say something to him that is not out of a book, say it. That is not part of the assignment and nobody here is asking. It is available, that is all.

You have an hour Scripture would have written down, and seven days of silence have never once been seven days that did not count. It is written so they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, the duration is recorded and no response to it is, and the Spirit of God is saying it in that room today.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man in a chair reading into a silence.

You are doing the thing Scripture wrote down for seven days, and a page with nothing coming back has never once been an hour that did not happen. Nobody here is handing you a list and nobody here is mentioning your phone. Job 2:13 records the sitting and the silence and gives the duration of both, and never once measures the seven days by anything Job said in return, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who takes an assessment out of a quiet room.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You are free of a nervous system that needs a signal, and no feedback has never once been the same thing as no result. It is written for they saw that his grief was very great, the silence is the right response to what is in front of them and the sitting goes on through it, and the Spirit of God is saying it beside that bed today.

One page. Out loud. No assessment.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud in the chair beside the bed with the book shut on your knee. Not because saying them makes anything move: the moving belongs to God, and He was writing down silent sittings as things that counted long before anybody read aloud into a quiet room. You say them because you belong to Christ and Christ is in you, and Scripture gives His people a mouth to agree with what He has already settled. What happens in that room, and when, is His to work out in His own way and on His own clock, and I put no timetable on Him.

  1. Silence in that room when I finish a page, you are quiet and you were never an answer about the hour. Job 2:13 says and none spake a word unto him, so by the Holy Spirit I read one page out loud tonight in the name of Jesus and I do not check afterward.
  2. Suspicion that I am doing it for myself, go. The written word records seven days and seven nights of silent sitting as an act worth writing down and measures it by nothing that came back, and by the Holy Spirit I am done assessing an hour that has no signal in it.
  3. Father, You had them sit on the ground for seven days and You wrote down the duration and not one word of reply. Your word says for they saw that his grief was very great, so by Your Spirit I read one page out loud in that room today.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
